Welcome to Environmental Science at the University of Dundee! We offer a distinctive set of degree programmes, taught by research-leading staff committed to exellence and innovation in all our teaching activities. Our courses are truly interdisciplinary, bringing together staff based in life sciences, chemistry, geography and physics, and able to being you the benefits of their complementary disciplinary strengths and excellent facilities. Given a common focus by a Programme Committee which I chair, the programme is truly integrated as well as interdisciplinary, applying scientific principles to environmental systems and issues. As a teaching team, we pride ourselves on our enthusiasm, commitment, approachability and our open-door policy to students.
Our Level 1 modules will introduce you to the geological environment, the hydrosphere, environmental physics, environmental chemistry, the atmosphere and the biosphere. Thereafter, in Level 2, you will be introduced to applications of Earth observation from space and to the management of Earth resources. The inclusion of satellite remote sensing at Level 2 and subsequent levels, and the availability of life sciences modules taught by world-class scholars, are just two of the many factors that make the Dundee courses distinctive. We place great emphasis on fieldwork in our courses and the enhancing of your portfolio of skills, in particular IT, statistics, group work, written and oral communication. At Levels 3 and 4 your teaching is research-led and you have the flexibility, in the School of Life Sciences, to opt for the Single Honours BSc or to take BSc Joint Honours with Geography, depending on your particular interests and specialisation. MA Joint Honours with Geography provides a popular degree programe for many students in the School of Social Sciences. Please explore this site to find out more about our distinctive and progressive courses in the University of Dundee.
As a graduate in Environmental Science you will have high employment prospects. You will have a solid scientific base knowledge together with valuable interpretative skills much sought by prospective employers in many fields such as environmental protection, environmental consultancy and the water industry. I encourage you to visit us on one of the University's visit days, to meet members of the Environmental Science teaching team and to learn more about our degree programmes. You and your parents can also make arrangements to visit us on an individual basis throughout the year. You are assured of a warm welcome.
