iPhone global mobile phone market share up to 8.9% for Q1 2013 Smartphones

The first quarter of 2013 was a historical one in the transition from feature phones to smartphones. It was the first time where smartphones (51.6%) were more popular across the globe than “dumb phones” (48.4%). No prizes for guessing which company is leading the pack with shipments. Samsung shipped an incredible 115 million phones in total, taking just over a quarter of the market share with 27.5%. Nokia’s slide in to irrelevance continues as it shipped only 61.9 million devices, down by over 20 million on the same period last year.
Apple is sill doing relatively well considering it only has 3 devices on the market. It sold 37.4 million iPhones last quarter, taking (as near as makes no difference) 9% of the global market share. Year-on-year change went up by only 6.6%, which will do nothing but bolster analysts claims that the budget iPhone has to come at some point this year if Apple wants to continue being one of the front runners in the race for global mobile domination.]
