NEWS RELEASE
film bookKANSAS CITY, Mo - - Avila University Press announces the publication and release of Experimental Film: The Missing Frame, a book detailing the history and contributions of experimental film, compiled and edited by Avila film professor Ben Meade, Ph.D.
Meade spearheaded the project, which gathered contributions from scholars of experimental film from eight countries around the world. Each contributed one of the book's 11 chapters, including Meade, Dotty Hamilton, Ph.D., Avila's dean of the School of Visual and Communication Arts, and professor Nicole Esquibel, MFA.
"Publishing our first book is truly exciting," said Ron Slepitza, Ph.D., president, Avila University. "Committed to furthering educational excellence, the university saw this book as an opportunity to promote scholarship among our faculty and increase our global outreach."
Among the topics covered in the book:
The Avant-Garde: The General Post Office Film Unit, and British Documentary in the 1930s.
The Impulse Toward Narrative.
Film Island: The Music Pictures of Tibor Szemzö.
Women on the Front: Sexual Politics, Experimental Aesthetics and Female Authorship, and
Maya Deren and the Birth of the New American Cinema.
According to Meade, the book was created for three reasons. It was intended to revisit experimental film with particular studies of specific filmmakers, presenting detailed, unprejudiced, theoretical discussions of specific aesthetic and technological issues. Secondly, it was designed to create a new awareness of experimental film today and how the techniques are manifested in new forms and competing genres. Lastly, it was meant to raise awareness of experimental film, which has been largely ignored by the masses, even though it remains one of three major genres of film: narrative, documentary and experimental.
In addition to the text, each copy of the book includes a bonus DVD of an exclusive interview Meade conducted with experimental film pioneer Stan Brakhage, believed to be the final interview Brakhage gave before his death in 2003.
