[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] n TOP STUDENT: Shelby Fangrath, 18, beat out every other earth sciences student in the state to win the Geological Society of Australia Gold Medal.

It means she was the top scoring Queensland student in the earth sciences subject for Year 12 last year.
This is the second year in a row a student from Mount Isa has earned the prestigious honour. In 2008 another former Spinifex student, Frances Potter, won the medal.
Shelby said she was overwhelmed to have received the award.
"At school right through the subject the teachers would always show us Frances' work as an example of how good our work should be and now I have actually won the same award as her, which makes me feel really proud," she said.
"It's like all of the hard work paid off. I really didn't expect it at all. It feels really fulfilling."
Shelby is currently studying a Bachelor of Science at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane.
She said she hoped to work in the area of geological sciences as a geologist, biologist or ecologist.
The teenager said it was studying earth sciences which ignited her passion in the field.
Spinifex State College head of science Monique Gilles yesterday said she was full of pride when she heard one of her students had won the Geological Society of Australia Gold Medal again.
"It just goes to show that we're really doing the right thing with the students out here," she said.
"It really proves that our students from a regional area are just as good if not better than kids in the city."
Shelby will receive her gold medal at an awards ceremony in Brisbane during]
