The buzz currently swelling around the second season of the HBO comedy "Eastbound and Down" is reminiscent of other TV shows -- "Arrested Development" and "Mad Men," for example -- that were pushed hard on the public at a point when their critical acclaim well outstretched their actual audience.
In fact, our usually big-screen-minded friends at FilmDrunk featured "Eastbound," which premiers next Sunday, on their latest podcast.
The show does have a lot going for it: Star Danny McBride projects Will Ferrell's hilarious lack of self-awareness, but without Ferrell's (who is the show's executive producer) baggage.
And McBride's Kenny Powers character -- a washed-up, fouled-mouthed absurdly politically incorrect former major league relief pitcher -- is the kind of clueless scamp folks can't get enough of in fiction -- although in reality they hate. (Just ask John Rocker, Kenny Powers' real-life inspiration, about that dichotomy.)
Still, it's a pretty one-dimensional show that only has a six-episode history of being entertaining. Will "Eastbound and Down" be able to live up to the hype, or will it inevitably start to lose something off of its fastball?]
