Easily create long rope, chain and tentacle figures in Poser.
Poser 6, Poser 7, Poser Pro & Poser 8 on both PC & Mac
Version_03 now includes the option to add "Easy Pose" dials to existing figure. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
The figure may be created either from the full model or just one section. The resulting figure will include dials to make posing easy. Providing that you have the right to redistribute the original geometry you will also have the right to redistribute the Poser figure that this application creates. A number of sample models are included for you to experiment with.

  • Method 1:- Create figure from full model
  • Method 2:- Create figure from sections
  • Method 3:- Create a chain made from individual links.
  • Method 4:- Add "Easy Pose" dials to existing figure.

Method 1:- Create figure from full model
(click here for on screen video tutorial)

Start by modeling a long rope or tentacle using your favorite 3D modeling application. Save the model in OBJ format, then bring it into Poser using the Poser menu File > Import Wavefront object. You do not need to define each group in the model provided that all the polygons are grouped in some fashion. i.e any grouping will be fine but no grouping is not.
The model must be positioned in the scene such that the length is anywhere along the X axis and is equidistant about the Y and Z axis.
With the model selected in the scene click the button "Create from full model."
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Set the number of sections that you want the model to be comprised of. More sections will result in smoother bends.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
(You can follow this example by importing Poser 7RuntimePythonposerScriptsPhilCAll Tied UpSample Objectstentacle.obj)
The option to include taper morphs is set off by default. If you require them, click the "Include taper morphs" button. Creation of taper morphs in figures with more than 30 sections can take a little while to complete.
Click the "Create Figure" button and your figure will be created.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Finally complete the process by saving the figure to the Poser library.

Method 2:- Create figure from sections
(click here for on screen video tutorial)

Using your favorite 3D modeling application create the start, middle and end sections of the figure. The start section will be the same as the middle section but with some extra geometry to the left. The end section will be the same as the middle section but with some extra geometry to the right. The middle section must be positioned such that the length is equidistant along the X axis and is equidistant about the Y and Z axis. The left hand end of this section must match the right. The sections have open ends.
Import just the middle section and with it as the selected actor in the Poser scene, click the button "Create from sections"
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Set the number of sections that you want the model to be comprised of. More sections will result a longer figure.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Using a Start and End section is optional. If you have modeled them you can click the buttons indicated to browse for their respective OBJ files. If they are not required simply leave the Start and End set to "None".
(You can follow this example by importing Poser 7RuntimePythonposerScriptsPhilCAll Tied UpSample Objects
Tentacle Start.obj
Tentacle Middle.obj
Tentacle End.obj
)
Note that only the middle section needs to be loaded into the scene. In the image below the Start and End sections have been imported and offset purely to show how they have been modeled.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
The option to include taper morphs is set off by default. If you require them, click the "Include taper morphs" button. Creation of taper morphs in figures with more than 30 sections can take a little while to complete.
Offset X and RotateX will be covered in the next section. For this example leave them set to their default values.
Click the "Create Figure" button and your figure will be created.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Finally complete the process by saving the figure to the Poser library.

Method 3:- Create a chain made from individual links.
(click here for on screen video tutorial)

Using your favorite 3D modeling application create a single link for the chain. The link must be positioned such that the length is equidistant along the X axis and is equidistant about the Y and Z axis.
Import two copies of the link. Position the second link a distance to the right and rotated such that it looks correct relative to the first link. Make a note of the displacement (xTran dial) and the rotation (xRotate dial).
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Delete the second link from the scene, select the first link and click the button "Create from sections".
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
(You can follow this example by importing Poser 7RuntimePythonposerScriptsPhilCAll Tied UpSample ObjectsChain Link.obj)

Set the number of links (sections) that you want the chain to be comprised of.
Click the OffsetX and RotateX buttons to set their values to the previously noted xTran and xRotate values. Note that the translation distance is in Poser Native Units not empirical units. To set the displayed units in Poser go to Edit > General Preferences > Interface.
Leave the Start and End buttons set to "None".
Click the "Create Figure" button and your figure will be created.
Then because each link should not deform when it is bent use the "Back" button to navigate to the Utilities and click "Set Bends OFF".
Finally complete the process by saving the figure to the Poser library.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Method 4:- Add dials to existing figure.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Clicking the "Add Dials To Existing Fig" button will allow you to add "Easy Pose" dials to an existing figure. Use it on such things as dragon tails or chameleon tongues. The body parts being manipulated must be in one chain not bifurcated. That is to say a tongue is OK but a forked tongue is not.
Before you start be sure to know the body parts joint rotation. All the parts being manipulated must have the same rotation order. You can check what it is by selecting the actor and looking in the bottom section of the Joint Editor.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
In the example illustrated here you can see that the Joint Order is "YXZ". You do not need to change it, just make a note of it, you will be asked to input that information as part of the script dialog.
Finally just to clarify, this is the Joint Order of the actors being manipulated, not the Joint Order of the Body or the actor chosen to host the master dials.

Utilities
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] Set Bends ON :- Enables bending in all body parts.
Set Bends OFF:- Disables bending in all body parts. Use this option for chains etc. in which the individual links rotate but should not deform.
Reset Figure:- Resets the figure to its memorized state. If no memorized state has been set this will reset the figure to its zero pose.
Fix Seams:- If a figure has been created from sections and the left hand end did not exactly match the right hand end splits will occur when the figure is posed. This tool seeks to correct this. It will do its best but it will be better if the section had been modeled correctly initially.
Create Taper FBM:- This script will also form taper morphs in the newly created figure. In Poser 7 this is completely automatic so these buttons are not required, however in Poser 6 the morph will have been formed but the Full Body Morph will require some user input:-

  1. Click "Create TaperY FBM" This will set all the TaperY morphs in the figure to a value of 1.000.
  2. Use the Poser menu Figure > Create Full Body Morph. When prompted type in "TaperY" as the full body morph name.
  3. Click the "Reset Figure" button.
  4. Repeat for the TaperZ morphs.
  5. Finalize by saving the figure to the library

Notes
When importing the model section only the "Weld identical vertices" option box should be selected. Although it would be tempting to select "Centered" or "Place on floor" this could result in misalignment of the subsequent start and end sections.
When creating a figure from sections it is only the middle section that is initially required in the scene. During the process you will have the opportunity to browse for the files that make up the start and end sections but there is no requirement that these should be displayed in the scene. To do so could cause the process to fail.
There is apparently still a bug in the Mac issue of Poser 7 in that the OBJ file is getting saved in the Poser 7 folder rather than the folder that you select to save the figure to. It is completely unrelated to this or any other script, you can recreate it yourself by loading a figure, entering then leaving the set up room and resaving the figure to the library. The OBJ file name also takes on the full path. Poser 7 Mac users will need to rename this OBJ file and move it to the library folder manually.

Installation
Extract your downloaded zip file to your Poser folder retaining the directory structure. If you are using a Mac you may need to extract to a temporary folder then copy the files over. You can not install to a remote runtime.
A free utility is available to install zip files into Poser. This will be of particular benefit to Mac users.
